MTPak Coffee Education Centre: How does ground coffee packaging affect its flavour and shelf life?

Recently, we spoke with Maddison-Tate Burke of the MTPak Coffee Education Centre on how packaging affects ground coffee. Here's a little snippet from the interview with our head roaster, Rob Everette:

This makes high-quality ground coffee packaging absolutely essential. “Packaging is very important when it comes to all coffee, but that is especially true with ground coffee,” Rob tells me. “Oxygen exposure will be the most damaging factor to ground coffee’s freshness, so we consider that the top priority when selecting packaging.”
At Everette’s Coffee, Rob uses sealing techniques that keep the ground coffee packaging airtight between uses. “We use a heat-sealed bag that includes an airtight zipper, so even after the bag is opened, you can reseal it to prevent oxidation as quickly as possible,” he says. In turn, this makes it easier for customers to preserve their coffee’s flavour and aromatic compounds.
Therefore, you won’t necessarily need different bags or structures for ground coffee packaging. You just need to be extra mindful in terms of how the bags are sealed and stored.

MTPak Coffee provides prime packaging solutions and customized designs for specialty coffee companies, and in their Education Centre you can find helpful articles on a wide range of topics impacting the coffee industry.
